And That is Why Music is So Dangerous

5th June 2023 (Mon), 7:30pm

Cindy Ho – Piano
Romer Quartet – String Quartet

Dvorak: Piano Quintet in A Major, op. 81
Janacek: String Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata”, JW 7/8

Very fond of Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, Tolstoy composed a name-after novella which unfolded a gruesome aristocratic murder from hearsay within a train compartment, stripping bare human evils, and more unexpectedly, the stirring danger of music on manipulating human sensations: from jealousy to joy, from anguish to radiance, perhaps a few notes suffice. Deeply inspired by the novella, the Czech composer Leoš Janáček composed a string quartet of the same name, recreating the inner conflicts, emotional outbursts and catharsis of the character. Pianist Cindy Ho is joined by Romer String Quartet this time to present some of the most exotic tunes from Czech highlands. Leading with Antonín Dvořák’s signature folk dances and Bohemian tunes, the ensemble will take the audience to the picturesque Balkans landscape, from the most verdant peaks of jubilation to the deepest valleys of sorrow.
